Best Web Resources for architects and designers

Tips and Utilities

Arch Info

Arch Info is the world’s largest internet database of architects from both the past and present. You can look up a specific project by the name of the architect, town or other key words. You can simply type in a building name and get a comprehensive article listing the building type, involved parties (architects, consultants, firms etc.), address and map, timeline of construction, background information and web references. Similarly you can look up architects. With over 55, 000 entries almost all significant buildings and architects are covered by this database. Check out the database here

Tech Street

Tech Street is the ultimate web resource for any safety codes and/or standards an architect would have to look up for their work. The site provides you instant access to 500, 000+ industry codes from around the world for a small fee. The website has been set up by Thomson Reuters, the world's leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals. A tracker system notifies you about any change in these codes. Anything from code for energy efficient design to safety codes for elevators can be accessed on the site. Click here for more

Death By Architecture

This website is a bit of a mixed bag. The resources section is updated with interesting blogs, websites and design projects that are picked up from all over the Internet. They also have a small store with quirky architecture related merchandise. But the real deal with this website is the interactive competition calendar.  You can browse contests year-wise or month wise. There is an indication system to separate major competitions from the smaller ones too. Check out the calendar here

Houzz

Houzz is a great web tool for interior designers. The website hosts photos, articles, product recommendations and a user forum. You can browse through their extensive database of images and add images and products to your ‘Ideabook’. The ‘Bookmarklet plug’ in lets you add images from any site on the internet to your Ideabook. Houzz is a great way to find and keep track of inspiration. Check out the website here

Design Inspiration

Design Inspiration is a lot like Pinterest. In fact it’s interface is strikingly similar and allows you to browse through a variety of images and bookmark them. You can create collections of great designs and check out what inspires others.  So why prefer this site to Pinterest? For the simple reason that it is completely dedicated to design and no other kind of content. There is a dedicated section for architecture that is quite riveting. Interior designers will particularly love the ‘search by colour’ option.Check it out here

PS: Even Archh can double up as a great web based networking tool for architects. Read more about it here: A guide to Archh
