How to impress clients with your design pitch

As an architect or interior designer, the most important skill you need to develop after your trade is the ability to communicate. You need to be able to showcase your talent and convince clients to not just hire you but to trust that you know best. Here are some quick tips that are guaranteed to impress clients when you pitch a design

Don't just showcase a design, showcase a big idea

Whether you are an architect or an interior designer, what you create isn't just design for the client. It is so much more. Its not just a house, its a home. Its not just an office, but a breeding ground for growth and commerce. The client is not just looking for computer like technical expertise but a human understanding of their needs. When you start pitch, paint a picture for the client about what they are going to view before they actually view it. Be descriptive and be detailed. This opening should be no longer than 2 minutes long. It will prep them to see what comes next.

Shed light on the inspiration for the design

Clients want to be a part of the design process in whatever way they can. In your first meeting with the client make sure you get an understanding of what inspires them and their idea of aesthetics. Say your client seems to be a big fan of simplicity, draw from art movements that build on this. Elaborate on its stylistic characteristics. Both Architecture and Interior Design are a form of applied arts. Your client will appreciate you drawing your design from something larger than life and the design itself.  

Arrange the details in sequential order, from big to the finer details

Once you have conveyed the big idea and the inspiration that you drew from, move into the technical presentation. Give an overall view of the project and move into each room/facet of it. Trickle down to the finer details. If you're an architect start with the over all structure and move all the way down to the materials used and it's advantages. If you're an interior designer start with the essence of the room and move to finer details like where you will be sourcing materials, furniture etc. from.

Create a template to follow for all presentations

When presenting, create a neat powerpoint template that can be a standard for your work. The theme of the presentation should reflect your design sense. Make sure the logo of your company and brand colors are incorporated in the template. Sometimes the colors of your company may not go with the design colors, in this case you may make changes to the company colors while keeping the scheme the same. Remember, it need to look pleasing to the client. This isn't a branding exercise.

Make it available in all formats

When you meet the client make sure you have the designs in any format they might want. Keep a soft copy ready on a CD. If you're client are old fashioned, don't forget to carry a physical copy of the designs for their convenience. If they are tech savvy, keep a copy ready on your mobile/laptop so you can wirelessly transfer it. In any case, remember to give them the designs only after you fully present it.

Prepare for non-design questions

This is perhaps the most crucial part of the pitch architects and interior designers should be prepared for. Clients are more likely to ask you questions like how much the project would cost, permutation combination on the cost if certain things were changed, how much time it would take etc. Make sure such information in on your finger tips and you don't need to consult with someone else before shedding clarity on those. The presenter should be the ultimate source of information.

Pitch with a smile

Last but not the least, present with a smile. We know some clients can be more tough than others. When they ask a question that might seem silly to you, consciously remind yourself to smile when you answer. Remember, a charming designer can sell his/her design better than one who has technical knowledge alone.
